Lighting Maintenance: Extending the Lifespan of Your LED Systems

While LEDs are marketed as 'maintenance-free', commercial lighting systems still require care to achieve their promised 50,000 to 100,000-hour lifespans. Neglect leads to lumen depreciation, color shifting, and premature driver failure.

The Enemy: Heat and Dust

The LED chip itself rarely burns out; it degrades due to heat. The heat sink must dissipate thermal energy efficiently. If dust accumulates thickly on a high-bay fixture in a warehouse, it acts as an insulating blanket, causing the LED to overheat and fail.

  • Regular Cleaning: Wipe down optics and heat sinks annually, especially in industrial or dusty environments.
  • Check Drivers: The driver is the most common point of failure. Ensure drivers are installed in well-ventilated areas.
  • Seal Integrity: For outdoor fixtures, inspect rubber gaskets periodically to ensure IP ratings aren't compromised by UV degradation.

Lumen Maintenance (L70)

When an LED is rated 'L70 at 50,000 hours', it means after 50,000 hours of use, the light output will have slowly dropped to 70% of its original brightness. Proper maintenance extends this curve significantly.
