IP Ratings: The Ultimate Guide for Outdoor & Bathroom Lighting

IP (Ingress Protection) ratings define how well a fixture keeps out solid objects (like dust) and liquids (like water). Choosing the wrong IP rating can lead to fixture failure or dangerous electrical shorts.

Decoding the Numbers

The first digit (0-6) refers to protection against solids. The second digit (0-8) refers to protection against liquids.

RatingProtection LevelWhere to Use
IP20Protected against large objects, no water protectionStandard indoor living spaces
IP44Protected against splashing waterBathrooms (Zone 2), covered porches
IP65Dust-tight, protected against water jetsGeneral garden lighting, exposed facades
IP67Dust-tight, temporary immersionDriveway uplights, wet landscape areas
IP68Dust-tight, continuous immersionInside swimming pools and fountains

The Coastal Challenge

In regions like Dubai and Bahrain, an IP65 rating isn't enough if the fixture is near the sea; salt corrosion will destroy it. You must also specify marine-grade 316L stainless steel. Explore our robust outdoor products on our [Outdoor Lighting](/outdoor-lighting-dubai) page.

Never use IP20 fixtures in a bathroom, and never submerge an IP67 fixture permanently.
